Studio Nienke Hoogvliet has been working on natural seaweed dyes for textiles for years. This resulted in her co-founding the company Zeefier, who are developing natural seaweed dyes into scalable dyes for the textile industry. To demonstrate the wide color palette of seaweed dyes, the studio made this kimono jacket dyed with Zeefiers’ locally sourced and produced seaweed dyes. In order to create a completely Dutch jacket, the studio also wanted to work with locally grown fibers. Therefore they collaborated with The Linen Project, the Dutch Crafts Council and Enschede Textielstad who focus on the local cultivation and processing of flax for linen in The Netherlands. The result is a jacket that demonstrates the potential of The Netherlands as a source of sustainable raw textile materials for the future.
